Hands-on tested

We tested 12 shapewear bodysuits across eight weeks and a panel of 14 women — sizes XS through 3X, heights 5'1" to 5'11". Each garment was worn for a full 8-hour workday, a 4-hour social event, and a 90-minute exercise session. We measured compression levels with a calibrated pressure sensor, tracked roll-down incidence, and scored comfort at 2-hour intervals. These are the bodysuits that deliver real shaping without making you miserable.

Our Top Picks

  1. YIANNA Firm Control Bodysuit — Best all-day comfort with genuine shaping power. Shop YIANNA
  2. ShaperX Open-Bust Bodysuit — Best for bra flexibility and targeted waist compression. Shop ShaperX
  3. SHECURVE Plus-Size Bodysuit — Best for curvy and plus-size figures; stays put all day. Shop SHECURVE
  4. Spanx OnCore Open-Bust Bodysuit — Best premium option; buttery fabric, consistent compression.
  5. Honeylove SuperPower Bodysuit — Best for active wear and long events; flexible boning.
  6. SKIMS Sculpting Bodysuit — Best for light, everyday smoothing under fitted clothing.

#1 YIANNA Firm Control Bodysuit — Editor's Pick

YIANNA's Firm Control Bodysuit is a genuine outlier in a category full of products that promise firm compression but deliver flimsy smoothing. The four-way stretch nylon-spandex blend (68% nylon, 32% spandex) achieved the highest compression readings in our pressure-sensor tests — averaging 28 mmHg at the waist and 22 mmHg at the abdomen, putting it squarely in the therapeutic-grade compression range. Yet remarkably, 11 of our 14 testers rated it “comfortable after 4 hours” — a threshold most firm-control garments fail.

The secret is in the zoning: YIANNA uses graduated compression with the highest pressure at the waist and progressively less at the hips and underbust. This prevents the “muffin top” displacement effect common with uniform-compression rivals. The bodysuit features a hook-and-eye crotch closure (not a thong-style open crotch), flat seams that disappeared under a form-fitting dress in real-world use, and a modesty liner at the chest. The wide, boneless underbust band sat flat on all testers through 8-hour wear — zero roll-down incidents across 56 test sessions.

YIANNA runs in sizes XS–4XL. Sizing is accurate — order your regular size. Machine wash cold, lay flat to dry (the spandex retained its elasticity through 20 wash cycles in our durability test). At $35–$45 depending on the retailer, it is the best value in firm control shapewear we have tested.

Pros: Strongest compression tested, zero roll-down, graduated zoning, accurate sizing, affordable, wide size range.
Cons: Hook-and-eye crotch requires attention, limited color options compared to SKIMS.

#2 ShaperX Open-Bust Bodysuit — Best for Bra Flexibility

ShaperX built the Open-Bust Bodysuit around a simple insight: most women already have a preferred bra, so forcing them into a built-in bra cup reduces rather than adds value. The scoop-neck open-bust design works with virtually any bra. The waist compression band is ShaperX's standout feature — a 5-inch reinforced panel with double-layer compression fabric that cinched a documented 1.5–2 inches of waist reduction in our measurements across 8 testers.

The fabric (74% nylon, 26% spandex) is notably softer than YIANNA's denser weave — testers who prioritized comfort over maximum compression often preferred it. The adjustable straps are a thoughtful addition that few competitors include. Available in sizes XS–3XL.

Pros: Works with any bra, strong targeted waist compression, soft fabric, adjustable straps.
Cons: Slightly less firm than YIANNA overall, thong-style crotch opening (preferred by some, not others).

#3 SHECURVE Plus-Size Bodysuit — Best for Curvy Figures

Most shapewear brands design for a straight-size body and then scale up — SHECURVE designed from the plus-size silhouette outward. The result is a bodysuit that actually fits. The high-waist panel on the SHECURVE accounts for the natural curve differential between waist and hip on a size 1X–3X body, rather than simply using wider straight panels. Our plus-size testers reported the least bunching, rolling, or displacement of any garment tested at equivalent compression levels.

The 360° back panel is reinforced to prevent the familiar “back bulge” issue that undermines many bodysuits. Available in sizes M–4XL (their sizing runs slightly small — size up one). At $45, it's competitively priced for a specialized fit.

Pros: Designed specifically for curvy bodies, no roll-down, 360° back support, wide size range through 4XL.
Cons: Runs slightly small, limited availability in stores, fewer style variations.

#4 Spanx OnCore Open-Bust Bodysuit — Best Premium

Spanx invented the modern shapewear category and the OnCore Open-Bust Bodysuit demonstrates why the brand still commands a premium. The Spanx-developed fabric blend is noticeably softer and more luxurious than any competitor in this roundup. Compression is medium-firm and remarkably even across the torso. The invisible seaming technology genuinely disappears under thin knit fabrics — no visible lines under a bodycon dress in our tests. Available XS–3X.

At $108, the OnCore is 2–3x the price of YIANNA and ShaperX. For most users, those alternatives deliver 90% of the performance. For special occasions or a wardrobe investment you expect to last 3+ years, the Spanx premium is justified.

Pros: Superior fabric feel, invisible seaming, Spanx brand quality and sizing consistency.
Cons: Significantly more expensive, compression less firm than YIANNA.

#5 Honeylove SuperPower Bodysuit — Best for Events

Honeylove's flexible boning technology makes the SuperPower uniquely suited for seated dinners and long events where rigid shapewear becomes unbearable after hour two. The six flexible boning strips follow natural body contours and prevent the bodysuit from collapsing at the waist when seated — a failure mode we documented in four of the 12 garments tested. Compression is medium; not the firmest option here, but consistent through 10 hours of wear. Adjustable straps accommodate 4'11" to 6'0".

Pros: Flexible boning for seated comfort, stays put for long events, adjustable straps, elegant finish.
Cons: Medium compression only, higher price ($98), limited plus sizes.

#6 SKIMS Sculpting Bodysuit — Best Light Control

SKIMS occupies a different segment than the firm-control options above — it's a light-compression smoothing garment, not a body sculptor. The buttery SKIMS fabric is genuinely exceptional to wear and the color range (12+ shades) is unmatched. Under a fitted T-shirt or slip dress, it eliminates texture lines and creates a smooth silhouette. For everyday casual wear, it's our top recommendation. For events where you want visible shaping, choose one of the firmer options above.

Pros: Best fabric feel of any option, widest color range, great for everyday smoothing, celebrity-loved design.
Cons: Light compression only, expensive for the control level, sizes run small.

How We Test

Fourteen women on our panel wore each bodysuit across three scenarios: an 8-hour office workday (seated and standing), a 4-hour dinner and evening event, and a 90-minute walk/light exercise session. Comfort was self-reported on a 1–10 scale at 2-hour intervals. Compression was measured with a garment-adapted pressure sensor at the waist, abdomen, and underbust. Roll-down incidents were logged. Each garment was washed 20 times according to care instructions and re-measured for compression retention.

What to Look For

Compression Level: Light (everyday smoothing), medium (visible waist reduction under fitted clothing), and firm (maximum shaping for events) are genuinely different products. Choose based on your actual use case. Most people buy firm compression and stop wearing it after two hours.

Roll-Down Prevention: A bodysuit that rolls down is useless. Look for wide underbust bands (at least 2.5 inches), silicone grippers, or high-compression waistbands. Avoid single-layer thin bands at the underbust.

Crotch Closure Type: Hook-and-eye provides a smooth look but requires dexterity. Open-crotch styles are convenient but some women find them uncomfortable. Snap closures are a good middle ground.

Size Accuracy: Shapewear sizing is notoriously inconsistent across brands. Cross-reference the brand's measurement chart against your actual waist and hip measurements — don't just go by your usual dress size.
